How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also where the camshaft lies in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jumpy chain link in the upper chain. However the code will not appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test as there are several connector pins, and each has its own functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when the sensor is in full operation. Look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power like the engine is out of gas or the injectors aren't firing anymore. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, 3 were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get zero ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not certain what to do, but i think i've pretty much ruled out everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or from a parts store. It is easy to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about fuel injector timing etc. To do this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you encounter a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger the engine shutting down.

A failing G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate gearbox speed counter and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, audi a1 keys and/or a misfire in gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues it is most likely that your sensor is going bad and requires replacement.
